Frequently Asked Questions
What is Salsa?
Salsa is an explosive mix of African, Latin and North American rhythms and the most popular and fashionable form of Latin dance. It originated in Cuba in the 1920s from an unlikely mix of African rhythms, the melodies of Spanish colonies and Cuban rhythms like rumba and danzon.
In the 1950s it became influenced by jazz, blues and black American rhythms. Horns such as the trombone, trumpet and saxophone were introduced, giving the music its rich, distinctive sound. Other Latin rhythms, such as mambo, have also been incorporated into the salsa muscial structure, producing a faster dance with complex footwork and many twists and turns.
Salsa has spread rapidly since the 1950s following the large migration of Cuban and Puerto Rican people to both America and the rest of the world. More recently, salsa has exploded onto the British music scene, attracting large numbers of people to classes and clubs across the UK and giving birth to some fantastic music and salsa dance events.
Frequently Asked Questions
When can I start my classes?
You can start at any time. Our classes are ongoing and run all year round. You do not need to book in advance and you are welcome to come along on the night, but try to arrive no later than 5 minutes before the class is due to begin.
Frequently Asked Questions
How will I progress?
You will learn a variety of different steps and turns each week according to the level of the class. When our instructors feel like you are ready they will recommend that you move on to the next level.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to bring a partner?
No. It is not necessary to bring a partner with you. Most people come on their own or with a friend. There are usually plenty of people to dance with and we encourage you to change partners throughout the class. Learning to dance with different partners is essential to developing your leading and following skills.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long will it take to learn?
This obviously depends on your natural ability and how often you practice, but we would expect most people to be dancing the basics (unaided by alcohol!) after your first class. The first few classes will always be the hardest, so don't get frustated if you don't get it right away. Give yourself a few classes to get it together. Remember - there is Latin spirit in everybody!
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I wear?
Save your carnival costumes for our special events and the sportswear for the gym! Salsa is an energetic yet elegant and sensual dance and your clothing should reflect that. Both men and women should wear leather-soled shoes as opposed to rubber-soled shoes which can stick to the dancefloor and damage your joints. Most women wear shoes with a medium-sized heel and protection for their toes. You should wear clothing that will keep you cool and does not restrict your movement.
